|   |  | It was New Years Eve. James and I decided to go to my fathers house to spend the holiday with him. They were making finger foods and having a party of sorts even though it was just family. It was like every other visit, honestly. James and my father went out to the store and I was talking to my stepmother, Tabitha, about how James said he was gonna propose during our anniversary or Christmas but he decided it wasn’t the right moment. James was very adamant about getting the moment absolutely perfect and that’s why he kept putting it off.
About an hour past when my father and James finally came back from the store, spending another hour tucked away in the other room with my parents. My siblings decided they wanted to play Just Dance and Michael Jackson: The Experience. We played for a few hours before putting on White Chicks, one of my favorite movies.
We watched this movie up until 11:55 and switch over to the balldrop. I was almost asleep when they woke me and asked me to stand up with everyone and reluctantly I agreed. Everyone in the family was counting down til midnight, sharing a New Years kiss with James. I did not see my parents in the corner of the living room, recording us, until James slipped down to one knee and I went into shock. I couldn’t speak.
I had been waiting for that moment for a while and now that it was happening I couldn’t speak. I remember that all I could hear was the music from the tv in the background and James saying, “Ciara, I love you so much. Will you marry me?” and I still couldn’t speak. I broke out in tears, covering my mouth as most people do when they cry, nodding my head because I still couldn’t get the words out.
The ring he used to propose was the ring my father had bought my stepmother about ten or so years ago and James thought it would be a lot more meaningful if he proposed to me using a ring my father had originally chosen. I believe we stood there hugging each other for a good three minutes or so as I bawled my eyes out because I was so happy and surprised. My father got the whole thing on video! |
